Pond Ducks

This morning I was finally able to take a picture of the ducks that have been hanging out on the pond for the past week.  They've been avoiding me like the plague.  When I'm on one side of the pond they are already scooting to the other.  I still can't tell what kind they are.  Maybe some kind of wood duck.  I do know they remind me of Woody Woodpecker the way their feathers stick up at the back of their heads.
Here's the thing...we had ducks a couple years ago.  I loved the ducks.  I called them the Duck Maffia because they were the eyes and ears of the farm and used our geese as their hired muscle.  Now you're wondering why we don't have any at the moment.  Two words.  Snapping turtles.  Here's the the thing though...if they've been there for a week and are still swimming the snapping turtles must have moved on.  Maybe it was because of the drought last summer and the pond getting low.  With the early warm weather we've been having I'd have thought the turtles would be awake and hungry after sleeping all winter.  All I know is if there were still snappers in there that could eat a duck they would have been part of the menu days ago.
Here's the other thing...Tractor Supply has ducklings.  I've been fighting the urge to go in that store all week.  It's been hard, but I have to go today.  No getting around it.  Other problem is the kids are home from school so they'll be going with me.  They won't be trying to deter me very much.  Oh, they'll say something pitiful about why we shouldn't get them, namely something with the word Dad in it, but they won't really put much effort into it.  This is going to be a tough trip to TSC.  Do I get the cute fuzzy little ducklings or do I window shop?  Gosh, I just don't know...  Smiling & Waving, Sharon

The beak doesn't look quite right for a woody, Looks too long.Almost looks like mergansers although don't know why they'd be on a pond. Post if you get a closer photo.

Hi Gill! I'll have to look up a picture of a merganser. I haven't seen the ducks out there this morning. Hopefully they've just continued on their journey to wherever they spend the summer and haven't become a snapper meal. Although, it would be nice if they stay here. Smiling & Waving, Sharon
